This book was produced in tandem with The Dowse’s major collection exhibition "Unhinged: Opening the Door to the Dowse Collection" in 2023. However, it was also intended as a standalone collection book that served this purpose well beyond the life of the exhibition. The idea was that just by picking up this book and casually leafing through it, a person could get a sense of the magic of The Dowse and the breadth, beauty, and eccentricity of the art collection.
Featuring over four hundred different artworks and tens of thousands of words of text, the challenge of the layout was in presenting a huge volume and range of content without feeling cluttered.
Meant to evoke magic and mystery, the book drew on a dark palette with pops of metallic green reminiscent of precious emeralds or witches’ potions. Produced in limited edition, the book was intended as a precious item to be cherished much like the objects in the collection itself.
